(AP) ? The man accused of murdering 6-year-old Etan Patz underwent a psychological examination as he awaited arraignment Friday, exactly 33 years after the boy vanished without a trace in one of New York City's most traumatic missing-child cases.

After decades of dead-end leads and false hopes among investigators, Pedro Hernandez, a former convenience-store stock clerk, was arrested Thursday in the 1979 slaying.

Etan disappeared on a two-block walk to his school bus stop in Manhattan in a case that helped give rise to the national movement to publicize and find missing and abducted children. The boy was one of the first missing children to appear on a milk carton.

Hernandez, who was 18 at the time, told investigators this week that he lured the little boy into the shop with the promise of a soda, then led him to the basement, choked him to death and put his body in a bag with some trash about a block away. Authorities never found a body.

Hernandez, now 51 and living in Maple Shade, N.J., was scheduled to appear in court for the first time later Friday ? a date now recognized as National Missing Children's Day.

The first court proceedings were set to unfold even as investigators were still working to corroborate what they said was an emotional, surprise confession by Hernandez, who emerged as a suspect in the decades-old case just days ago.

Police said Hernandez was taken to a secure wing at Bellevue Hospital early Friday to get medication for an existing health problem. While he was there, psychologists questioned him about his mental state, then cleared him to return to a regular holding area.

Police would not disclose the existing condition.

His court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, had no comment as he arrived at the courthouse, saying he hadn't met with his client yet.

He asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez's relatives assembled at the courthouse, including his wife, daughter and another man, who huddled together on a wooden bench, turning away interview requests for more than an hour.

"It's a tough day. The family is upset. Please give them some space," Fishbein said.

Crime-scene investigators arrived Friday morning at the building in Manhattan's fashionable SoHo section that once held the bodega where Hernandez worked.

People who lived in the neighborhood in the late 1970s described the place as a neighborhood institution, and one of the few places to buy groceries in a part of the city that was then grimy, industrial and only just emerging as a haven for artists.

Former Soho resident Roberto Monticello, a filmmaker who was a teenager when Patz disappeared, said he remembered Hernandez as civil but reserved and "pent-up."

"You always got the sense that if you crossed him really bad, he would hurt you," Monticello said, although he added that he never saw him hit anyone.

Monticello said Hernandez was also one of the few teenagers in the neighborhood who didn't join in the all-out search for Etan, which consumed SoHo and the city for months.

"He was always around, but he never helped. He never participated," Monticello said.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday that investigators had yet to determine any motive for the slaying, but authorities said they have a detailed, signed confession, as well as accounts of incriminating remarks Hernandez made to others.

Etan disappeared on May 25, 1979, after his parents, Stan and Julie Patz, allowed him to walk to his school bus stop for the first time. The stop was adjacent to the bodega. The boy never made it onto the bus.

Hernandez wasn't initially questioned like other workers at the bodega and moved to New Jersey not long after the killing, Kelly said.

But the commissioner said Hernandez had told a relative and others, as far back as 1981, that he had "done something bad" and killed a child in New York City.

He emerged as a suspect after a tipster contacted police, following news reports about a fruitless search for the boy's remains last month in a basement near the Patz home.

ZBoard electric skateboard sneakers-on (video)

ZBoard

We spotted the dudes behind the ZBoard at TechCrunch Disrupt earlier this week, but we weren't content to just ride the electric skateboard up and down the halls of Pier 94. We asked them to take a walk with us to Washington Square Park so we could take the board for a spin in a more realistic setting -- also, any excuse to skip out of work a bit earlier to go skating in the park on a sunny Friday afternoon is hard to turn down. We initially asked them to meet us at one of New York City's many skate parks, but they balked at the suggestion -- after all, it's more of a commuting board than anything else. It's big and fairly heavy, so attempting to go vert with the thing is pretty much out -- grinding and kickflips are likely off the table, too.

Co-creator Geoff Larson told us he managed to get the thing up on two wheels, but that's about the limit of trickery at the moment -- we're sure that'll change pretty quickly, as soon as more boards make their way into the hands of the public. In the meantime, the ZBoard is all about getting around, giving you about 10 miles on a single charge. Larson added that one skater said he planned to use his ZBoard to make the long trip to the skatepark and back, carrying his manual board along for the ride. Join us after the break for some sneakers-on impressions.

Robert Greenwald: Charles Koch + Roger Ailes = Ohio University?

Why would the esteemed Ohio University host a talk by the likes of Roger Ailes? Maybe we should ask one of the talk's patrons, Charles Koch.

Ailes, of Fox News fame, is giving his talk today. The guy who invited him says the point was to get "perhaps the most influential newsman in America" to spark a discussion about "free speech and the media," particularly given OU's "first-rate school of journalism." But Roger Ailes isn't a newsman and doesn't do journalism. He does political advocacy that's (very) thinly disguised as journalism. As Eric Boehlert of Media Matters says, "places of higher learning shouldn't help perpetuate the Fox myth while turning a blind eye to the lasting damage Ailes's enterprise is doing to journalism and to our national discourse."

Might this act of selling out have something to with the fact that the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation serves as an underwriter of the George Washington Forum, which is the OU group hosting the speech? As detailed in my film Koch Brothers Exposed, Charles Koch is a billionaire industrialist and one of the leading financiers of the American Right. He is known to meddle in educational institutions, infamously attaching strings to university donations by insisting he be able to veto a school's hiring decisions. Students and faculty at schools like Florida State University are fighting this corruption valiantly, but the encroachment on academic integrity and freedom remains a threat.

In the case of Ohio University, the full extent of Koch's donations to the George Washington Forum isn't known. But we do know that Koch specifically underwrote a talk the Forum hosted by John Yoo, author of the Bush torture memos (belying Charles and his brother David's claims that their ideological activism is restricted to economic issues). We also know that through the Forum, the Charles Koch Foundation awards grants to students "interested in studying free market ideas" under an OU professor who researches conservative politics and economics. Students applying for the grant in the past have had to write an essay about a book by libertarian Henry Hazlitt. Is it just me, or does it look like Charles Koch is paying the university to spread his right-wing ideology?

Not that Koch is the only problem. Indeed, Ailes himself is a big donor to Ohio University and its communications school. If an institution of higher learning is willing to take money from an anti-journalist like Ailes, it will inevitably spread his message to students, one way or another.

Today, as Ailes takes the mic at OU, those who believe in education should redouble our efforts to stop the slow erosion of academic integrity. This erosion is reflected in the influence wielded by wealthy ideologues like Charles Koch and his political bullhorn, Roger Ailes.

Children Exposed to Smoking Face Long-Term Respiratory Risks

ScienceDaily (May 20, 2012) ? For more than three decades, researchers have warned of the potential health risks associated with exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), especially among children whose parents smoke. Now a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Arizona reports that those health risks persist well beyond childhood, independent of whether or not those individuals end up becoming smokers later in life.

The study will be presented at the ATS 2012 International Conference in San Francisco.

"This study shows that exposure to parental smoking increases the risk of persistence of respiratory symptoms from childhood into adulthood independent of personal smoking," said Juliana Pugmire, MPH, DrPH., research specialist at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "Persistent respiratory illness in childhood and young adulthood could indicate an increased risk of chronic respiratory illness and lung function deficits in later life."

Although a significant proportion of children throughout the world are exposed to ETS, primarily as a result of their parents' smoking, there is little information regarding the long-term effects of that exposure, Dr. Pugmire noted.

"Earlier studies established a link between parental smoking and childhood respiratory illness, but in this study, we sought to demonstrate whether these effects persisted into adulthood," she said. "A handful of studies examined whether children exposed to parental smoking had asthma that developed or persisted in adulthood but most did not find an association.

"We examined asthma as well as other respiratory symptoms and found that exposure to parental smoking had the strongest association with cough and chronic cough that persisted into adult life," she continued. "Exposure to parental smoking also had effects, although weaker, on persistent wheezing and asthma in adulthood."

The researchers drew data from the Tucson Epidemiological Study of Airway Obstructive Disease (TESAOD), a large, population-based, prospective study initiated in 1972 that enrolled 3,805 individuals from 1,655 households in the Tucson area in an effort to assess prevalence rates and risk factors of respiratory and other chronic diseases. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires that were issued every two years until 1996. For this study, the researchers used data from 371 individuals who were enrolled in the TESAOD as children.

"We identified individuals who entered the TESAOD study when they were under 15 years of age and who were followed to adulthood during the study," Dr. Pugmire said. "When we collected data from the child participants, we also collected information about the parents' smoking status."

Dr. Pugmire and her colleagues looked at the reported prevalence of active asthma, wheeze, cough and chronic cough, which was defined as a persistent cough that had occurred for three consecutive months. They then divided the data into four categories: never, which included individuals who had not reported that symptom during childhood or adulthood; incident, which included individuals who had never reported the symptom in childhood, but had reported at least one incident in adulthood; remittent, including participants who reported at least one incident in childhood and none in adulthood; and persistent, which included individuals who had at least one report of a symptom during both childhood and adulthood.

Once the data were collected, the researchers determined that 52.3 percent of children included in the current study were exposed to ETS between birth and 15 years. After adjusting for sex, age, years of follow-up and personal smoking status, the researchers found that ETS exposure in childhood was significantly associated with several persistent respiratory symptoms, including persistent wheeze, cough and chronic cough.

"Persistent wheezing from childhood into adult life has been shown to be associated with lung function deficits. Chronic bronchitis (defined as chronic cough and phlegm) is a significant risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) development later in life. Therefore, the persistence of symptoms like chronic cough and wheeze into young adulthood may indicate a susceptibility to lung function deficits and chronic respiratory illness with age," Dr. Pugmire noted.

Future studies will be needed to examine the potential synergistic effects of personal smoking and exposure to parental smoking on risk of COPD morbidity and mortality in middle to late adult life, she added.

Keys To A Successful Intercultural Relationship

Creating and maintaining a successful intercultural relationship takes work. In my experience, people are more easily able to maintain close relationships with others in their own culture because it?s easier to do so; when you grow up in the same basic environment as another person, you have your own common-ground as a basis for any relationship. People from the same cultures can use what I like to call a ?cultural shorthand?, in order to quickly establish rapport and to create friendships. With different cultural backgrounds in play, it?s a little harder but it still can be done.

The first thing you need to do when opening relationships with someone from a different culture is to learn what you can about them. What are their traditions? What can you learn about their mentality and their culture? Observing and understanding these things will help you to develop the capability of relating to their culture. I always say, ?No matter how different we seem on the surface, underneath it all we?ve got a lot in common, and a lot to share?.

After taking the time to get to know something about the other culture, it?s time to test what you?ve learned. This stage takes patience and understanding, but it is well worth the effort. In my experience people don?t particularly like being challenged about their cultures, but they love teaching it to others.

Instead of criticizing something that seems odd to you, ask a good question about it. Chances are, you?ll come away with a better understanding of why something is done a certain way, and your friend will have the opportunity to introduce a part of their culture to you. For extra credit, you can explain how the same thing is done, or not done, in your own culture. Remember, the objective is not to criticize, but to exchange information.

At some point in your cross-cultural relationship building adventure, you?re going to have to deal with the three hundred pound gorilla in the room; the language barrier. Language problems can be a source of frustration, but they can also be a great opportunity to learn. When you don?t understand something don?t get frustrated, just ask for an explanation. At this point, the most valuable ten words to say are ?can you explain this to me in a different way?? For extra credit, learn how to say this sentence in your new friend?s own language. This might just be the best sentence in another language that you?ll ever learn.

Respect is crucial at all times. There might be some things about another culture that you don?t particularly care for. Their might even be some things that you find crazy, or even offensive. Remember to approach these issues respectfully. You don?t have to eat a strange dish if you don?t want to, but you don?t have to wrinkle your nose up and scowl either.

Finally, you?ll want to avoid cultural conflicts. There may be some things about another culture that you?ll never learn to appreciate. You may even come to hate these things. Building relationships is about building bridges based on mutual agreement.

Imagine that you had a friend who you argued with non-stop every single time you met them. That?s not a friendship that?s going to last for too long, is it? Talk about the things that come easy, and save the arguments for another time.

(AP) ? On his 30th birthday, Tony Parker first kept the San Antonio Spurs on pace for what might be another lopsided playoff sweep. Then the All-Star who's always quick to needle Tim Duncan about his age finally acknowledged his own.

"I'm old. Used," said Parker, laughing.

Chris Paul, meanwhile, isn't acknowledging anything: Not his aching body that everyone but him is talking about, or the Los Angeles Clippers' season careening toward the end this weekend unless things change fast.

Parker scored 22 points, Duncan had 18 and the Spurs beat the fading Clippers 105-88 on Thursday night, taking a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference semifinals and winning their 16th in a row with yet another playoff blowout.

For the 13th time in a winning streak that seldom run this long in the NBA playoffs, the Spurs won by double digits. Only two other teams have sustained a longer winning streak in the playoffs: the 2004 Spurs (17) and the 2001 Lakers (19).

"I think for us, is to not look at that," Parker said about the streak. "Concentrate on the task. We know Game 3 is going to be very, very hard. I think we should focus on that and not focus on the winning streak, or what we're doing good."

Paul responded to his awful Game 1 with only a slightly better encore, scoring 10 points as the Clippers now head home desperate to steer out of what's starting to get the feel of a sweep.

Game 3 is Saturday in Los Angeles, and Game 4 is Sunday.

When the Clippers land in California early Friday, they'll be home for the first time in nearly a week. They've played seven games in 13 days, and they'll have played nine in 16 by the time the weekend is over.

Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro knows his team needs rest. Blake Griffin scored 20 points but added another injury to the list, this time what he described as a hip flexor strain. He's already battling a sprained left knee and shaking off a turned ankle in Game 1.

He had just one rebound.

"We're not going into these next two games thinking 'Oh, let's try to keep it close,'" Griffin said. "There's no moral victories or moral losses here. We're not worried about how many points we lost by."

The All-Star matchup of Paul vs. Parker went from a Game 1 bust to a lopsided mismatch, and appeared to prove Paul is hurting more than he's letting on. Del Negro says his star is still struggling with an aching hip and groin, even as Paul insists he's OK.

He again looked anything but. While Parker ? the last of the Big Three to finally hit the big 3-0 ? celebrated by more than tripling his seven points and dreadful 1-for-9 shooting in Game 1, Paul shot 4 of 9 and had just five assists.

At halftime, the third-place finisher in the league's MVP voting had more personal fouls (3) than points (2), assists (2) or rebounds (2). He finished with eight turnovers, a career playoff high.

"No excuses, I've just got to play better," Paul said. "But I don't ever recall having that many turnovers.

Del Negro said his star will bounce back.

"He'll get loose here soon," Del Negro said. "We need him to."

Duncan, on the other hand, stayed in a playoff time warp. At 36 years old and playing in his 182nd postseason game ? and with no contract beyond these playoffs ? Duncan turned in another solid performance that sometimes recalled the former MVP who was winning championships in his prime rather than the old-timer who's chasing a fifth ring now.

He scored 14 points in the first half ? almost as much as the rest of the starting lineup ? and finished 9-of-14 shooting. Points in the paint weren't even close: The Spurs had 50, and the Clippers 18.

Boris Diaw added 16 points and Danny Green had 13 for the Spurs. Manu Ginobili scored 10 and was held scoreless in the second half.

Randy Foye was the Clippers' only other player in double digits, scoring 11.

If this keeps up, a near-historic postseason for the Clippers will end this weekend unless they figure out a plan fast.

This is only the third time in the woeful 41-year history of the franchise that Los Angeles' long-maligned "other" team has survived to the second round. Their momentum started with a stunning 27-point comeback on the road against Memphis in their playoff opener, but the Clippers haven't made a rally stick in San Antonio.

A bumbling start had the Clippers already down by 15 in the first quarter before clawing back with a 9-2 burst. Getting to within 46-42 at halftime had the Clippers' bench heading to the locker room clapping and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich storming off fuming.

Halfway through the third quarter, however, the lead was back to 16.

"There was a refocus of energy at halftime," Duncan said. "We came out understanding of what we had to do to finish this game."

As the deficit deepened, so did the Clippers' frustration.

DeAndre Jordan seethed and slammed the ball when a missed rotation gave Green an uncontested 3-pointer that stretched San Antonio's lead to back to double digits in the third. Less than a minute later, Foye trotted upcourt shaking his head after Paul's fumbled dribble gave Kawhi Leonard a clear path for a breakaway dunk.

Following another 3-pointer by Green? this one pushing San Antonio's lead to 70-60 ? the turned-around Clippers looked so disjointed that Green darted back down and knocked the ball out of Paul's hands on the ensuing inbound.

Notes: The Spurs followed up tying a franchise playoff record with 13 3-pointers in Game 1 with 10 this time... Talk about a pro cut: A 12-year-old Spurs fan suspended from his San Antonio middle school for shaving the face of forward Matt Bonner in his hair scored free tickets to the game and a meeting with his favorite player before tipoff. Bonner, whose mother is a teacher, said he was puzzled by the school's decision and gave Patrick Gonzalez an autographed pair of shoes and an autographed jersey. "Keep supporting us redheads in the NBA," the Red Rocket told his biggest fan.

Planning A Home Improvement Project? Try These Great Tips ...

If the outside of your house isn?t appealing to you, then chances are your neighbors feel the same way. Look at your shutters, and see if they could use a new coat of paint or need straightening. Make sure your driveway is not in disrepair as this is what welcomes visitors to your home. You want it to be inviting.

Planning landscaping to reduce water usage is not just for homeowners in drought-stricken areas. Between changing weather patterns, rising populations and falling water tables, water for home irrigation is only going to grow more expensive. By selecting plant species that require less water than the usual landscaping standards, a wise homeowner can save a lot of money.

Brighten up your kitchen cabinets simply by washing them. Dish soap and warm water works wonders on most dust, smudges and built-up grease. For heavy soil or grease, use a store-bought cleaner with orange oil that is specifically made for wood cabinets. Test a spot first, and then work from the top down.

Get new window treatments. Window treatments are a cheap, fast way to change the appearance of a room, and something as simple as replacing window treatments can help you re-imagine a space. Stick to fabrics and materials that are easy to clean, and you?ll be on the way to great window coverings that look great.

For a relatively easy and inexpensive way to save money on heating and cooling costs in your home, add an extra layer of insulation to your attic walls. This will prevent energy from leaking out and save you money while allowing you to keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

Always make sure your air conditioner filters are clean and are replaced regularly. When the filters for your AC are dirty, the airflow is restricted. This causes your AC unit to use more energy, driving up the cost of your energy bill. Therefore, keeping filters clean ensures you enjoy a reduction in your monthly energy expense.

If you are thinking about repainting the exterior of your home and the existing paint is in good shape, pressure wash the outside of the home prior to putting on new primer. This will get any dirt and debris off the old paint and give the primer a good surface to bond with.

To help improve your home, try tiling your patio. You can create an area where you can relax or eat. Tiling the patio is pretty inexpensive, but you do need a professional tiler. Tiles are available in many colors, styles, and materials, so be creative and create your own personal space.

Purchase a freestanding electric fireplace unit to supplement your heating sources in the winter months. Not only do they cost pennies per hour to run, but they also can be easily moved from room to room. You can even turn off the central heating system at night and cuddle up with an electric fireplace in the room where you are sleeping. The simulated flames will also create a relaxing ambiance in any room.

Taking the time to read these tips is going to help you do the best possible job to complete the home improvement projects that you are considering taking on. Apply the information that you have learned from this article to the planning of your project and enjoy the beauty of the completed project.

Fallout from Greek crisis set to go global

Sergio Perez / Reuters

A trader reacts on the floor at the Madrid Bourse. European shares sank to new 2012 lows in a broad-based sell-off as concern over contagion from Greece gripped investors.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

As Greece teeters on the edge of financial collapse, European officials have a new task before them: preventing the financial turmoil from spreading across the continent, across the Atlantic?and around the rest of the world.

The fear is that Greece?s financial turmoil could spread beyond its borders despite European efforts to create a ?financial firewall? to contain it.

??The spillover effects, the chain of consequences are very difficult to assess,? said International Monetary Fund President Christine Lagarde on Wednesday. ?We can certainly assume that it would be quite messy.?

Lagarde, whose agency has been among those providing financial support for Greece, said the IMF has begun making ?technical? preparations for Greece?s ?possible departure from Europe?s common currency, the euro.

Greece?s exit from the eurozone seems more likely every day. A two-year standoff deepened this week between Greek voters,?1 in 5 of whom are unemployed,?and European officials, led by German Chancellor Angel Merkel, who are insisting on continued ?austerity? by the Greek government in exchange for a financial lifeline.?

After deep budget cuts sent the Greek economy into a painful recession, voters ousted the former government that agreed to measures that would inflict even more pain on Greece?s banks, businesses and households.

Merkel and Lagarde remain steadfast in their insistence that continued financial aid depends on whether Athens adheres to tight-fisted spending policies.

"Nobody is going to give the Greeks a penny unless they put a government in place which implements austerity,? said David Roche, president of Independent Strategy, a London-based investment research firm.

Depositors have already begun pulling their euros out of Greek banks as the odds rise that Athens may soon exit the common currency.

Without continued financial aid, the Greek government is expected to run out of cash in a few weeks. That would almost certainly bring another round of bond defaults, increasing pressure to abandon the euro.

Beyond defaults on debt issued by the government, Greece?s suspension of the euro as its official currency would likely invalidate much of the more than half trillion dollars? worth of private borrowing by households, companies and other levels of government. That would drive its economy even deeper into recession.

Without a backstop, Greece?s banking system would also face a sharp contraction, if not collapse, as?the value of its assets implode. Analysts estimate that the value of any new currency --?the drachma, for example --?introduced to replace the euro would force markdowns of as much as 50 percent or more. ??

The immediate impact on U.S. banks would likely be limited. After sharply reducing exposure to Greece for the past two years, American banks hold roughly $6 billion worth of Greek government debt. ?

But the effect?on the European banking system could be severe if investors and depositors grow increasingly fearful that other debt-heavy countries, such as Spain, Italy, Ireland or Portugal,?might also eventually leave the euro zone.?

CNBC's Silvia Wadhwa reports on German Chancellor, Angela Merkel's comments on keeping Greece in the euro zone.

?Capital flight from those countries would have to be ring-fenced by unlimited amounts of government bond buying by the European Central Bank and also with guarantees for depositors so they wouldn?t take their money out of places like Portugal, Ireland, Italy and Spain,? said Roche. ?Are we ready? No.?

The financial markets are already anticipating further deterioration; investors are bailing out of stocks across Europe, with bank stocks especially hard hit. They?re also dumping Spanish and Italian government bonds, driving yields to the kind of unsustainable levels that initially sparked the Greek crisis two years ago.

Since then, European officials have been cobbling together a ?financial firewall? ? a series of measures to backstop failing banks and prevent another full-blown crisis. The latest move late last year by European central bankers to lend banks roughly $1 trillion in cash has apparently provided only a temporary reprieve. Banks hoarding cash to weather the coming storm have tightened credit, further slowing local economies.

Other agencies, including the IMF and a recently created ?stability? fund, are also available to help put out any financial fires. But analysts ? and some American officials - have long expressed concerns that Europe?s bailout fund isn?t nearly big enough to handle a banking crisis that spreads beyond Greece.

"Greece is peanuts as far as the United States is concerned," said Uri Dadush, former economic policy chief at the World Bank. "But if Greece leads to the contagion of Spain and Italy, the euro could implode. This is big business for the U.S. We're talking trillions of dollars in direct and indirect exposure to the European banking sector."

Ongoing demands for austerity in exchange for financial aid have brought Europe?s economy to a dead stop. The latest data show gross domestic product flatlined in the first quarter, largely because the ongoing turmoil has sapped business and consumer confidence and spending.

That could spell more trouble for?America's businesses and consumers.

With U.S. government spending contracting and consumer spending weakened by slow wage growth, manufacturing exports have provided one of the few bright spots for the U.S. economy. In the last five months, U.S. manufacturers have added 167,000 jobs to their payrolls.

Until recently, Europe was a ready market for goods made by those workers. More than half of U.S. foreign investment and a fifth of all American exports end up in the European Union.

But unemployment in Europe, currently at 10.9 percent, is rising. In Spain and Greece, half of the work force under 25 is out of a job.

American companies are already feeling the impact; U.S. car makers Ford and General Motors recently reported that first quarter profits were hurt by a slowdown in car sales to European buyers.

A continued slide in the value of the euro would make matters worse for U.S. companies by making their products more expensive in those markets.

"Right now, the best case scenario in Europe is a recession," said Chad Moutray, economist at the Washington-based National Association of Manufacturers. "Any of the worst case scenarios threaten our growth strategy."

Students in tornado-hit Ind. town await 'Lady A'

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Tornadoes battered their school and homes, and spring break was spent cleaning up. Henryville has only begun to rebuild, but for one night, its high school students will get to put aside their worries for a private show by one of country music's biggest acts.

The southern Indiana community will share the spotlight with Grammy-winning Lady Antebellum on Wednesday night at the KFC Yum Center in nearby Louisville, Ky., where the trio will stage a "mini-prom" bash for students at Henryville Junior-Senior High School, followed by a benefit for the devastated community.

"With everything's that's happened ? the tornado and the destruction ? now we'll have something else to remember for the rest of our lives," said Henryville junior class vice president Kaitlyn Maloney, 17, who rode out the March 2 storm with her parents in the basement of their Henryville home. "This will give us something to remember that's happy."

The battered high school landed both events in late March by winning Lady Antebellum's online "Own the Night" contest offering one school a concert at its prom. Schools as far away as northern Wisconsin submitted YouTube videos on behalf of Henryville, an unincorporated town hit by two tornadoes ? one packing 175 mph winds ? on a day when storms killed 13 people in Indiana and 24 in Kentucky.

Singer Hillary Scott said the band was moved by what she called the "selfless" entries from other schools, including rival Silver Creek High School in nearby Sellersburg, Ind.

"That was just such, honestly, an encouraging thing to think that those high schoolers, that generation, they're that helpless, they want to help each other that much," she said. "It was definitely an easy decision."

Scott, who visited Henryville's storm-damaged high school Wednesday in advance of the concert, tweeted afterward, "Seeing the destruction in person was TOUGH. Even more excited to hit the stage tonight!"

Lady Antebellum wasn't able to perform at Henryville's prom in late April due to a conflict with the band's schedule. Instead, it opted for the mini-prom open to the 188 junior and seniors and their dates who attended the school's formal prom, followed by a concert to benefit the town.

Each of Henryville's juniors and seniors received five tickets for floor seating at the show. The juniors and seniors at Silver Creek, the rival Clark County school that nominated Henryville, each received one ticket, said Tahnee Brown of concert promoter National Shows 2.

Lady A's Charles Kelley said the band hopes to lift the Henryville community's spirits by putting on a special show.

"We want to just go there and hopefully bring a little joy, meet them, shake their hands, encourage them to try to get through it as best as they can," the singer said.

The sold-out benefit is accompanied by an online drive that's one of several disaster relief efforts for Henryville. That online drive had generated more than $119,000 by Wednesday morning, but concert organizers say that reflects only a portion of the money that's been collected.

Henryville senior Austin Albert, whose father, Troy Albert, is the high school's principal, said the show will be a huge boost to the hard-hit community.

"It's given us something to look forward to ? something big for a small-town like we're in, that's pretty cool," he said.

The show also could be a sort of homecoming for many town residents, said Monroe Township Trustee Allen Bottorff, a lifelong Henryville resident whose home was damaged in the storms and lost a second one he and his wife were remodeling. He planned to attend the show with his family, including his 18-year-old twins, son Tanner and daughter Drew.

"It's going to be quite a bit of a reunion for a lot of people who have been scattered about," Bottorff said.
