Syria sent thousands of troops surging towards Aleppo in the early hours of Wednesday, where its forces have been pounding rebel fighters from the air, engulfing the country's largest city in total warfare to put down a revolt.

Recent days have seen Syria's 16-month-old uprising transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo and the slightly smaller capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded last week.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities. They appear to have beaten rebels back from neighbourhoods in the capital and are turning towards Aleppo, a commercial hub in the north.

Syrian forces fired artillery and rocket barrages early on Wednesday at the northern Damascus suburb of al-Tel in an attempt to seize the town from rebels, causing mass panic and forcing hundreds of families to flee the area, residents and opposition activists said.

The 216th mechanized battalion headquartered near Tel started bombarding the town of about 100,000 people at 3:15 a.m. (0015 GMT) and initial reports indicated residential apartment blocks were being hit, they said.

"Military helicopters are flying now over the town. People were awakened by the sound of explosions and are running away," Rafe Alam, one of the activists, said by phone from a hill overlooking Tel. "Electricity and telephones have been cut off."

Opposition activists said thousands of troops had withdrawn with their tanks and armoured vehicles from the strategic Jabal al-Zawiya highlands in Idlib province near the Turkish border and were headed towards Aleppo.

Rebels attacked the rear of the troops withdrawing from the region at the villages of Orom al-Joz and rami near the main Aleppo-Latakia road and at the village of al-Bara west of the Aleppo-Damascus highway, activist Abdelrahman Bakran said from the area.

In Aleppo, helicopters swirled overhead firing missiles throughout Tuesday, residents said. Rebels were battling government forces by the gates of the historic old city. Troops fired mortars and shells at rebels armed with rifles and machineguns.

"I heard at least 20 rockets fired, I think from helicopters, and also a lot of machinegun fire," a resident near one of the areas being shelled, who asked to be identified only by his first name Omar, said by telephone.

"Almost everyone has fled in panic, even my family. I have stayed to try to stop the looters; we hear they often come after an area is shelled."

Residents said fixed-wing jets had also flown over the city, followed by loud noises, although there were contradictory reports as to whether they had fired.

Some residents said they believed the planes had dropped bombs, but others said booming sounds could have been caused by supersonic jets breaking the sound barrier. A correspondent for Britain's BBC television said the jets had fired.

Assad's forces have occasionally launched air strikes from fixed-wing jets on other cities during the uprising, but tend to rely on helicopters for air strikes in urban areas.

The 16-month-old uprising has entered a new and far more violent phase in the past 10 days since rebels poured into Damascus in large numbers.

Last Wednesday, an explosion killed four members of Assad's closest circle inside a security headquarters, a blow that wiped out much of the top echelon of his military command structure and shattered the reputation for invulnerability that his family has held since his father seized power in a 1970 coup.

Western powers have been calling for Assad to be removed from power for many months, and now say they believe his days are numbered. But they fear that he will fight to the bitter end, raising the risk of sectarian warfare spreading across one of the world's most volatile regions.

Syria raised the alarm even further on Monday by confirming that it had chemical and biological weapons. In a statement that may have been intended to reassure the world but seemed to have the opposite effect, it said it would not use poison gas against rebels, only against external threats.

Do you want to become Shropshire's biggest loser? | shropshirelive ...

Gareth Connell and Maz Bedson, who run Purity Health and Fitness in Wellington, were consultant personal trainers behind the Sky 1 TV series Fat Families in 2010 and helped 33-stone Tarnya Cuff (DEL CORR) reach the top of the Wrekin.

Now the pair would like to change someone else?s life and have launched a search for the perfect candidate.

The person who is the most determined and dedicated to change will win two weekly personal training sessions in their private studio at Wrekin Professional Centre, plus a weekly 45-minute sports massage in the therapy room and on-going client support throughout their journey.

Gareth met Maz when she searched for a personal trainer in 2007 after gaining a considerable amount of weight while recovering after breaking her leg in 2005.

She said her life changing moment came when she chose to look for a personal trainer instead of enjoying a ?gin and tonic? while suffering from post-holiday blues.

Gareth Connell and Maz Bedson.

Gareth Connell and Maz Bedson.

Maz shed five stone through Gareth?s training and joined him as a professionally qualified personal trainer and together they set up a private fitness studio on Holyhead Road.

?We have developed a niche here for people who are in a difficult place. Whether they are overweight and have reached that dark place, or have had surgery and are finding recovery difficult or have had an injury which has left them depressed.

?Clients who come to us would certainly not have the confidence to go to a normal gym and work out in front of others or may not have ever done any form of serious exercise before in their life,? Maz said.

?We hope we can give someone the opportunity to access our services by launching this competition.

?I?ve got one man who was a self-confessed couch potato and he has lost 60lb. He couldn?t walk on the treadmill for five minutes and is now running a nine minute mile and walking up the Wrekin on a regular basis but the most important thing is he is enjoying it.?

Gareth said their clients included people with diabetes, arthritis and people undergoing stroke rehabilitation.

The two personal trainers often team up with neighbouring health professionals in the centre including a physio and osteopath, along with their client?s GP.

The winning candidate could be recovering from an injury or an illness and or just want to lose weight and get fit. They should also be willing for us to share their ongoing journey.

More effective TB treatment hope

Hopes of a new, more effective therapy for tuberculosis have been raised following the results of early trials.

The study showed three drugs given in combination killed more than 99% of TB bacteria after two weeks of treatment.

The therapy appeared to be equally effective on the drug-resistant form of the disease in the trials of 85 patients, a team led by Stellenbosch University in South Africa reported.

Larger studies are now taking place to further test the technique.

'Better, faster'

TB is one of the oldest and most deadly infectious diseases.

About 1.4m people a year die each year from it, mainly in developing countries.

Current treatments usually involve people taking drugs daily for six months.

The drug-resistant strain is much harder to treat and can involve up to two years of therapy.

Of the three drugs used in this study, published in the Lancet, one is new, while another is not yet licensed.

Andreas Diacon, lead researcher for the trial, said: "The results of this study give healthcare providers on the front-lines of the TB epidemic hope for better, faster tools needed to stop this disease."

Dr Mario Raviglione of the World Health Organization said the new treatment signifies ''major progress''

Mario Raviglione, a TB expert at the World Health Organization, said: "The results look strongly promising from this early trial.

"We could shorten drug regimens substantially for everyone, regardless of whether the form of TB is sensitive or multi-drug resistant."

(AP) ? "Wreck-It Ralph" won't hit theaters until November, but about 6,000 fans at Comic-Con got to see 10 minutes of it on Thursday.

The Disney Animation film takes viewers inside the world of vintage arcade games, where characters such as Q-Bert, Clyde the Ghost from "Pac-Man" and Kano from "Mortal Kombat" consider their video-game gigs day jobs, and after 30 years, Wreck-It Ralph is sick of his.

John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch are among the voice stars. Reilly and Silverman appeared alongside director Rich Moore at Thursday's panel.

Moore announced that Grammy-winner Skrillex will contribute music to the soundtrack and "Firefly" star Alan Tudyk will play a role in the film.

Comic-Con continues through Sunday.

Treating HIV and preventing it at the same time

Treatment drugs can do more than improve the health of people with HIV: If administered early, medications can also reduce the spread of the disease to sexual partners and may help stem the AIDS epidemic. But many logistical hurdles stand in the way of making this strategy feasible, affordable and effective, according to experts writing in Tuesday's edition of the journal PLoS Medicine.

The medications in question are antiretroviral therapies, which prevent HIV from multiplying and drastically diminish the amount of virus circulating in the blood. This not only curbs HIV's assault on the immune system, it also makes it much more difficult for an infected person to pass the virus to someone else.

This dual benefit was recognized last year in a landmark study finding that people with HIV who received treatment early on, before their immune systems encountered much damage, were 96% less likely to transmit the virus to their heterosexual partners than those who received treatment later in the course of the disease, when drug treatment is usually initiated.

One important implication was that HIV treatment and prevention efforts didn't have to compete for resources, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health. The study prompted AIDS experts to rethink their approach to preventing the virus' spread. Science magazine named it the "breakthrough of the year."

But capitalizing on this discovery may prove more difficult than some had hoped. Experts are now divided about whether the treatment-as-prevention approach can essentially halt the AIDS epidemic.

"The field is split about whether it's really the best thing and it's going to stop transmission, or if it's a small part of the puzzle," said Timothy Hallett, an infectious disease epidemiologist at Imperial College London, who co-wrote one of the new studies.

The real-world experience of public health officials in San Francisco, British Columbia, France and Australia ? four places where HIV testing and drug therapy are already common ? make clear that simply handing out pills won't be enough to beat back the virus, according to one of the studies.

Australia probably represents a best-case scenario, since antiretroviral drugs are freely available in that country and about 70% of people with HIV take the medication. But even there, the number of new HIV diagnoses has increased from 700 per year in 1999 to 1,000 per year in 2011, said study author David Wilson, an epidemiologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Early treatment "can have an impact, but it's not going to eradicate HIV," he said. "It's not the magic bullet."

For treatment to double as prevention, people need to get tested for HIV on a regular basis, start antiretroviral treatment once they test positive, and swallow pills for the rest of their lives to manage their viral load. Failure to follow through at any of these stages greatly reduces the drugs' ability to block transmission, Wilson said.

Making matters worse, people on the medication may stop taking other preventive measures, like using condoms, he added.

Biology and behavior are only two aspects of the treatment-as-prevention strategy that were examined in the PLoS Medicine studies. Some of the papers addressed economic considerations, including how long it would take for expenditures on antiretroviral drugs to pay for themselves by preventing costly treatments in people who remain HIV-free. The answer to that question is important for policymakers who are working with limited budgets.

Study authors also suggested that public health officials prioritize getting drugs to sex workers (who could spread the virus widely if untreated) and pregnant women (to reduce transmission to babies and deaths of mothers), among other groups. However, the authors noted the paucity of data available to evaluate whether these are the right groups to target.

Fauci, who didn't work on the new studies, said a primary objective was reaching and treating people who didn't know they were infected with HIV, since they unwittingly transmitted the majority of new HIV cases each year.

Public health officials in Los Angeles County, which has the country's second-largest concentration of HIV-positive people, hope to make testing a routine part of healthcare services to reach such individuals. Mario Perez, director of the county's HIV and sexually transmitted disease programs, called early treatment a "cornerstone" of the HIV prevention program.

"Getting a much higher proportion of residents living with HIV to be on treatment is going to be crucial to getting ahead of the epidemic," he said. "If we don't do that, I think we're going to continue to limp along with trying to prevent HIV infection."

And while the costs of drug treatment are much lower than they used to be, thanks in part to the development of generic alternatives to expensive name-brand drugs, other prevention methods like circumcision and condom distribution are far less costly.

Experts emphasized that early drug treatment should not be seen as a replacement for other preventive measures.

Though the strategy faces many uncertainties, Fauci said one thing was clear: "Biologically, it absolutely works." And if it can be successfully implemented, he said, "it would be an absolutely critical part of turning around the trajectory of the AIDS pandemic, in this country and worldwide."

A commitment made of faith? | wanderingdaph

A good relationship is not just about love. It is about respect, trust, faith, commitment and qualities that make growing together beautiful and not regretful. Some relationships are long and some are short. It may not be an easy ride but should be worth it.?I know many couples who have lived together for many years and some have even celebrated golden ?years of togetherness! In all these years together, they invest time, energy and care in nurturing their relationship. In the course of their time together, they travel, explore, find faith, happiness, struggle, make memories, fight, argue, bear the brunt of the other person?s ?frustration, forgive, move on to dreaming new things, make ends meet, express their love in different ways and support each other. Some have children, grand children and even great-grand children. Some are happy and content with just each other.

Relationships can be extremely complicated and impossible to apprehend and yet most of us are or have been in a relationship at some point. What makes people choose to love and live together? It is a decision that changes their lives and it takes courage, trust and commitment to make such a decision. It is quite hard to find two identical?people in a relationship!?They usually come with big personality differences and they may learn to embrace?and love?these differences. In the learning period, they may let go of their egos (hopefully) and build a firm foundation of trust and honesty. Relationships mature with time and experiences and sometimes it is easier than it appears to be. At other times, relationships can be hurtful, aggressive, abusive and dishonest. Disappointments are hard to deal with especially if it is from the one you love the most and sadly people who love the most, hurt the most. It is important to communicate, to listen and to exercise a healthy exchange of honesty and openness. No human being is made to be abused or suffer. There are crossroads in life when a couple needs to question the?integrity?of their relationship when it starts being over-whelmed with relentless disappointment and hurt. Respect is important and should be mutual in a relationship.

Video: California proposes controversial immigration bill

>>> now to a controversial bill in california dubbed by supporters at the anti arizona law. the measure is designed to prevent racial profiling by police. it would allow local authorities to ignore federal requests to detain nonviolent illegal immigrants for deportation. that, by the way, conflicts with federal policy. the measure is awaiting final approval by the assembly. it passed the state senate last week. the big question, will governor gary brown veto it? joining me is the author of the bill, tom ammiano . i've read reports from law enforcement personnel who feel this proposal by you puts them at odds with do they follow state law or do they follow the rules of the federal government in place?

>> we're not really violating the federal law . i understand. i have sympathy for law enforcement . we or working very well with them.

>> you've heard that feedback, right?

>> yes. the more we converse with law enforcement , the more they are convinced, you know, we have quite a few police chiefs, et cetera , who are supportive of the trust act. they don't want to waste resources detaining people with no serious criminal records at all. they would prefer to be taken out of this process rather than be the tool of the i.c.e. program which unfortunately has gotten a little cavalier, a little cowboy. we had 75,000 people deported in california last year, and only about seven out of ten of them -- rather only 30% of them had anything seriously wrong. it cost the cities a lot of money, caused families to be broken up. that's not how we want to do it in california . we'd like to take the lead on this and exercise some standards and some --

>> what would be those standards then? if a law enforcement person pulls over someone -- it was only two weeks ago the supreme court did strike down certain portions of the as adds law, but they did let stand that "show your papers" provision, allowing police to check someone's immigration status.

>> yes, only if there's a questioning of the seriousness of their charges. so remember the i.c.e. program is a program, not a law. it's simply requesting we detain anyone that they feel should be detained. we're going to say, no, we want community standards . we'd like to re-establish the trust that a community has to community policing programs, et cetera . and also not expend resources, law enforcement resources. if we do detain people, it's at our expense. there used to be an mou that tailored this law or program more specifically to communities. they did away with that. we're trying to reinstate that. we feel it's the right thing to do. we feel it's humanitarian. again, we do need comprehensive immigration policy here in the nation. so the trust act is really part of that movement.

>> what kind of feedback are you getting from the governor there?

>> he doesn't usually remark on potential legislation. i know historically he's been on the side of social justice issues such as this. we also know that he's been hearing from many of the -- of our allies, whether it's the faith community or labor. and we feel that any education or any conversation that's needed we're here to do this. you've got to remember this is more than california . this is really national.

>> obviously that's why it hit home when we saw it happening in arizona. thank you mr. ammiano.

>>> it's the american dream , going
