Cosmetic Surgery Patients Of The Greying Population ...

The Baby Boomer population is defined as the children born after WWII from the years 1946 to 1964. As the Baby Boomers get older many they are trying to retain their youthful looks more than ever. Older men and women are actually helping to increase the number of cosmetic surgeries performed every year. The population of the US is getting older but unlike previous generations, this population has placed a much more serious value on physical beauty.

In fact, some reports have shown that more attractive people actually make more money than their less attractive co-workers. Lots of people are saying in the work force longer than they used to and those more mature people want to look as good as their more youthful office mates and co-workers. There are many of different factors behind the increase in the popularity of plastic surgery. Reality plastic surgeon television shows compete with dramatic shows featuring good-looking plastic surgeons helping all sorts of equally sexy people. Cosmetic surgery is more accepted now.

People from this older generation have a healthy eating regimen, they exercise regularly and they want to look as youthful as they still feel. They are the first group of people to grow up with a real emphasis on healthy living. Cosmetic surgery can make a person?s external body look as good as they may feel on the inside. While some young people turn to cosmetic surgery to attract a love interest some older people use cosmetic surgery to simply look younger by a few years and improve their self-esteem.

The most popular cosmetic surgery request by far is the injection of Botox to smooth out wrinkly skin. Many of the more frequently performed procedures are meant to improve the skin, especially after decades of growing up without sun block. Skin and surface procedures such as microlaser facial peels, Botox injections, and wrinkle filling gels are often the first cosmetic surgical procedures tried.

Men usually opt for cosmetic procedures such as eyelid tucks, face tightening and other operations that make them look more youthful at the office. It is not only women who are visiting the local cosmetic surgeon. Most people think of plastic surgery as something that is more attractive to women, but that?s not always the situation. It?s true that many older women are having so-called ?mommy make-overs? which usually is composed of breast augmentation, a breast raising and a tummy tuck.

The expanding Baby Boomer population is more youth oriented and more interested hanging on to their natural health for as long as possible. As more and more mature men and women continue to search for ways to look younger there will be more cosmetic surgeons there to serve them. Plastic surgery is not just for the young anymore ? it is now a valid way for Baby Boomers to feel good about themselves.

Picasso portrait auctioned off for $41.5M

Misha Japaridze / AP

Pablo Picasso's "Femme a la Fenetre."

By Reuters

A 1932 Picasso portrait of his mistress sold for $41.5 million on Thursday at Sotheby's, helping drive a $163 million total for its sale of Impressionist and modern art which nonetheless fell short of expectations.

The auction featured nine works by Picasso led by "Nature morte aux tulipes." Nearly one-third of the 67 lots on offer went unsold and the auction missed its $170 million low pre-sale estimate.

The two Picasso portraits of his iconic muse Marie-Therese Walter, "Nature morte" and "Femme a la Fenetre," managed their pre-sale estimates, the latter fetching $17.2 million including commission.

The sale demonstrated "that in this market there continues to be a search for quality," said Simon Shaw, Sotheby's head of Impressionist and modern art in New York.?

Shaw added there was "active participation from today's truly global art market," but in a nod to the spotty results, conceded "there remains some scrutiny over estimates."?

David Norman, Sotheby's co-chairman of Impressionist and modern art, also cited "increasing participation from South American, Asian and Russian bidders" that marked the sale.?

The auction, coming a day after a tepid affair at rival Christie's which fell short of its $209 million low estimate, is likely to somewhat unsettle the art market to ahead of next week's sales of post-war and contemporary art, an arena that has seen sharply escalating prices over the past decade.?

The results of both sales were remarkably similar, from the prices of their top lots and percentage of works sold to buyers' carefully controlled bidding.?

While several works sold within their estimated range (estimates do not include commission of about 12 percent) and a few went significantly higher, there were noteworthy casualties including another Picasso, "Plant de tomate," estimated at $10 million to $15 million which could not draw a $9 million bid.?

Strong prices were attained by Picasso's "Le Viol," a work on paper from the collection of Greek shipping magnate George Embiricos which soared to $13.5 million against an estimate of only $5 million, and Monet's "Champ de ble," being sold by the Cleveland Museum of art, which fetched $12.1 million or nearly double the estimate.?

Another Picasso, "Femme a la robe verte," estimated at $6 million to $8 million, also went unsold.?

The auctions continue next week when both Sotheby's and Christie's hold their sales of post-war and contemporary art. Latin American sales follow later in November.

Insurgents kill 8 Afghan police, soldiers

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Authorities say five Afghan soldiers and three policemen died in attacks in the south and east of the country, the latest insurgent strikes against Afghanistan's security forces.

Ahmad Jawed Faisal, a provincial governor spokesman, says a suicide bomber killed the three policemen and wounded two others in the southern city of Kandahar on Thursday.

Sarhadi Zewak, spokesman for the governor in eastern Laghman province, says five troops died when their convoy struck a land mine.

The insurgents have been increasingly targeting Afghan authorities and security forces now that NATO is drawing down toward a final withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

Although the Afghan police and army have expanded rapidly to their planned strength of 352,000 members, they are plagued with low morale and a high desertion rate.

Bahrain uses teargas to disperse Shi'ites: witnesses

MANAMA (Reuters) - Police in Bahrain fired teargas and blocked roads on Friday to stop thousands of Shi'ite Muslims joining prayers led by one of their spiritual leaders, witnesses said, amid deepening tensions in the Gulf Arab kingdom and U.S. ally.

The island country hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet and has been volatile since majority Shi'ite Muslims began protesting last year against what they said was widespread discrimination, a charge the Sunni-led government denies.

Shi'ite leaders had called for people to turn out in support of Sheikh Issa Qassim in his village of Diraz, west of the capital Manama, after the government warned clerics not to criticize the government or incite violence.

The call for mass prayers appeared to flout a ban on rallies and protests announced by the interior ministry last month.

An Interior Ministry statement carried on the official BNA news agency said security measures had been taken to "prevent those who were trying to exploit prayers to provoke hooliganism ... and violate freedom of expression".

A statement issued by the government's Information Affairs Authority in English said police had turned away worshippers because the Diraz mosque only accommodated a few hundred people.

Witnesses said some arrests were made as riot police prevented non-residents from reaching Diraz, blocking off all roads and highways.

A 16-year-old Bahraini was killed on Friday on a highway not far from Diraz in what the Interior Ministry said was a traffic accident. Opposition and human rights activists said he had ran onto a busy road while being chased by police.

"Confirmed from several eyewitnesses: Ali Radhi was chased by riot police. He went onto the highway to run away, was hit by a civilian car. We hold the Ministry of Interior responsible for his death," Maryam al-Khawaja, acting head of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, said on her Twitter account.

Footage posted on YouTube that could not be independently verified showed a teargas canister going off inside a car carrying women who activists said were on their way to the prayers.

One woman was seen collapsing on the ground after exiting the vehicle.

Last year's Shi'ite-led protests were initially crushed by the kingdom's Sunni Muslim monarchy, with martial law and help from Gulf neighbors.

But smaller demonstrations have since resumed and anti-government protesters clash with security forces several times a week.

The violence has intensified in recent weeks. On Monday, the government said five home-made bombs killed two people in Manama.

The government accused Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of being behind the attacks. Hezbollah, a Shi'ite group allied with Iran, has previously denied interfering in Bahrain.

Bahrain's government said on Wednesday it had revoked the nationality of 31 men for damaging national security, including leading dissidents, parliamentarians, clerics and human rights lawyers.

The retired Stephan Bonnar suspended one year for PED usage

Stephan Bonnar announced his retirement last week, but soon after, it was announced he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs for his loss to Anderson Silva. Dave Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites for his UFC 153 loss to Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera.

Because the fights were held in Brazil, which has no regulatory commission, the fights were overseen by UFC vice president of regulatory affairs. He suspended Bonnar for a year, while Herman's punishment will be decided later this week and will involve some sort of treatment.

OK, but what's the point of such a suspension at this point? This was Bonnar's second time testing positive. The $5,000 fine and nine-month suspension he received last time didn't deter him from taking banned substances again. Now, he has to serve a suspension while retired. How does this stop him from using again if he does come back -- as so many fighters do -- or keep other fighters from using?

For Herman, Ratner did say marijuana is treated differently than performance enhancers:

"We feel very strongly that there's a big difference between PED's [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana," Ratner said to MMA Fighting. "We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it.

Considering two states changed their laws on marijuana on Tuesday, it's not surprising to see the UFC has a more lax attitude about the drug.

But performance enhancers can not just change the outcome of a fight. They can seriously injure a fighter, both for the one taking it and for the unwitting opponent. When a fighter blows weight, he or she quite often has to give up part of his or her purse. That money goes to the opponent. However, take a PED, and the opponent gets nothing?

Merely suspending a retired fighter and not punishing with a substantial fine is not enough for the UFC to stop future usage.
