A new video has appeared on YouTube revealing how users of the latest iPhone can bypass the four-digit pass-code in order to unlock a phone that does not belong to them.
The bug is a feature of the new iOS 6.1, and is similar to a problem previously encountered in iOS 4.1 which Apple took one month to fix.
Previously, phone thieves were unable to gain access to their victims' devices due to the need to enter a pass-code in order to unlock the phone, although the YouTube video shows how this can be overcome by simply making a call to the emergency services before quickly aborting it.
Emergency calls can be made even when a phone is locked, and aborting this call will momentarily keep the phone app open. By then pressing a series of buttons in the correct order the thief can unlock the phone, therefore gaining access to data and applications.
In response, Apple spokesperson Trudy Miller said: "Apple takes user security very seriously. We are aware of this issue and will deliver a fix in a future software update."
