Writing Search Ads in Context - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

A mother gives her son two ties for his birthday. He goes upstairs, puts on one of the ties, and comes back down to show his mother. She looks him up and down, then says, ?What?s the matter, you didn?t like the other tie??

This mother understands something that many search advertisers don?t: we make all our choices in context. Meaning, when we?re trying to select one option, we?re comparing it to all the other options in our consciousness at that moment. We?re trying to figure out which one will best meet our current needs.

Why We Limit Our Options

If I have a $5 bill and I walk past a smoothie bar, I?ll immediately start the mental calculus of whether I would be better served by a Very Berry Blast, a Pina Colada Shake, or a Peanut Cacao Freezee.

Noticeably absent from my choices are:

  1. Buying a set of hinges to fix the broken garden gate.
  2. Donating the money to the Land Institute.
  3. Putting the money into my kids? 529 plan.

Why wouldn?t I compare a frozen cup of fruit chunks to any of these arguably much better causes? Why does my brain exclude them from consideration?

Because of context. Making decisions, it turns out, expends a tremendous amount of energy. Not just metaphorical energy, but real, caloric, glucose-guzzling energy.

And allowing billions of choices equal time would blow our daily energy budget within one minute of waking in the morning. So our brains ruthlessly expunge everything that doesn?t seem immediately relevant to the decision at hand.

Books like Dan Ariely?s ?Predictably Irrational? and Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein?s ?Nudge? are textbooks in using this tendency of the brain to frame other people?s decisions. If we?re conscious of the phenomenon, we can engage in ?choice architecture? to increase the likelihood that people will select one option over another.

Context in Search Marketing

The search results page is the ultimate in controlled and contrived choice. The user types in a short phrase indicating their current need, and anywhere from 10 to 25 listings appear, all vying for that user?s click.

The question for advertisers is, how can you use the principles of choice architecture to get that click for yourself.

Defining Which Click You Want

chicken-coopThe first, most crucial step is to realize that you can?t get ? and don?t want ? every single click. You must decide which subset of the search market you?re going to attract with your ad.

For example, if you?re bidding on the keyword ?chicken coop,? you need to decide if you?re catering to a continuum from extremely DIY (?just give me the plans and I?ll build it myself?) to extremely DIFM (Do It For Me: ?build it, ship it, and set it up wherever you think it should go?). In between go coop kits, collaborative builders, and many other options.

For this example, let?s say you cater to DIYers looking for chicken coop plans, as your main business is selling backyard chicken supplies, and your plans are an effective lead generator.

Reading the SERP

Once you?ve identified your ideal customer, it?s time to view the search engine results page (SERP) through their eyes. Think of search advertising like chess: you wouldn?t make a move based on looking at your pieces, while ignoring those of your opponent.

Which ads speak to the primary need of your ideal customer? Which ones make some sort of empathetic connection?

chicken-coop-3-google-ppc-ads

The top and bottom ad above both target the DIYer, with different emotional appeals. LivingtheCountryLife.com uses words that appeal to ?progressives?: amazing, inspired. By contrast, CatawbaCoops.com appeals more to ?conservatives.? Both the ?old world styled? descriptor and the purposefully ungrammatical headline with its double negative speak to someone turned off by ?new and shiny? things.

The middle ad, while not targeting the DIYer, does raise a potentially important criterion: ease of cleaning.

As an advertiser, your challenge and opportunity is to claim a piece of territory in this fray. To position your offer in this already raging competition.

Invoking Your Ideal Customer Avatar

You can?t do this effectively unless you know something about your ideal customer. You can use a comprehensive process to achieve this kind of deep empathy through Avatar creation. Now, in the context of the SERP, you harness those insights to make an appeal that is more relevant and emotionally engaging than those of your competitors.

For example, let?s say this is your Avatar: a suburban mom named Shannon who shops at the farmer?s market, tries to buy organic and local food for her family, and wants four backyard chickens for a variety of reasons:

  1. Her dad grew up on a farm, and she wants to give her rushed, hyper-programmed suburban kids a taste of farm life.
  2. She worries about the treatment of chickens used in commercial laying operations.
  3. She wants her kids to eat the healthiest food possible.
  4. Her city just approved a chicken-friendly ordinance, and she wants to be a leader in her neighborhood.

Now, she also works a full-time job and doesn?t have a ton of time to build something. But she enjoys woodworking, and is proud of her skills. When she was a teenager, she and her dad would bond by doing little projects in the garage.

From this exercise, here are the messages I think will resonate with Shannon:

  1. Not all coops are equally healthy for chickens. Make sure you get the facts before building something ?pretty.?
  2. ?A taste of farm life in the suburbs.? This coop design honors farming traditions while conforming to suburban rules and mores.
  3. Easy to gather the eggs. Some coops look great, but make egg gathering a royal pain. This design will have your kids volunteering for the chore, not arguing about who has to do it.
  4. A chicken coop that?s so pretty, clean, and quiet, it will convert your neighbors. Some of them may be worried about the smell, about the noise, about the looks, about avian flu, about all sorts of things. When they see this coop, they?ll relax. Next thing you know, they?ll want chickens too.

An Ad Writing Contest

OK, now it?s your turn. Based on the assumptions I?ve made so far, write a Google ad that Shannon will click in preference to the other two DIY chicken coop ads. The winner gets an autographed copy of ?Google AdWords For Dummies?.

Rules: 130 characters total (25 for the headline, 35 each for the two description lines and display URL). You can invent an appealing URL.

Post your entries (you can create as many different ads as you like) as comments to this article. People can vote on their favorite by ?Liking? individual comments. I?ll make the final decision, but since I?m pretty lazy, I?ll weigh the voting very heavily.

Have fun! Now if you?ll excuse me, I?ve got to gather some eggs.

High levels of vitamin D in plasma protects against bladder cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? High levels of vitamin D are associated with protection against bladder cancer, according to a multidisciplinary study coordinated by molecular biologists and epidemiologists from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), the conclusions of which are being published October 30 in the Journal of National Cancer Institute (JNCI) .

The study has been led by N?ria Malats, head of the Genetic and Molecular Epidemiology Group, and Francisco X. Real, from the Epithelial Carcinogenesis Group, at the CNIO.

The authors of the study took blood samples from more than 2,000 individuals -- including patients with bladder cancer and control subjects free from the disease -- in 18 Spanish hospitals, making of this the largest study carried out to-date in this field. "We have seen that those subjects with the highest levels of 25(OH)D3, a stable form of vitamin D in the blood, are those who showed the lowest risk of suffering bladder cancer. These results indicate that high levels of this vitamin are associated with protection from the illness or, similarly, that low levels are associated with a higher risk of suffering from it," says Malats.

"We have also shown, using in vitro molecular analysis, that vitamin D regulates the expression of a protein -- FGFR3 -- that takes part in the development of bladder cancer," adds Real.

According to the study, this protective effect is more obvious in those patients with more aggressive cancers. "We observe that high levels of vitamin D diminish, above all, the risk of developing invasive bladder cancer with low levels of FGFR3; which is to say those cancers with the highest probability of metastizing," says Andr? FS Amaral, first author of the study.

The research results suggest that an increase in the dietary or supplementary intake of this vitamin, or via a controlled increase in sun exposure, might be beneficial for the patient in terms of prevention and treatment.

Bladder cancer represents a serious public health problem in many countries, especially Spain, where 11,000 new cases are registered each year, one of the highest rates anywhere in the world. In fact, it is the fourth most frequent type of tumour among Spanish males, after prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.

Following diagnosis, patients are continually observed with different follow-up techniques, among them cystoscopy, which requires the introduction of a small camera via the urethra to observe the bladder lining.

This type of follow-up affects the patients' quality of life and imposes heavy costs on healthcare authorities, thus further increasing the need to improve prevention strategies faced with this type of cancer.

Recent studies relate vitamin D levels with other types of cancer like breast or colon cancer. Despite this research, it is still not clearly understood which molecular routes are used by this vitamin to exercise its protective effect, or the role it plays in other types of tumours.

Storm knocks down some web sites, but most stay online

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Despite outages at a few well-known web sites and ripple effects that occasionally slowed communications around the country, the Internet came through the massive storm that swamped New York and New Jersey with relatively minor problems.

Built for resiliency and buttressed by the adoption of cloud computing, the Internet functioned largely as it was supposed to, industry experts said, routing around major disruptions in one of its central network locations, New York City.

"You don't hear about big content providers going offline anymore," said Jeffrey Young, a spokesman for major delivery network Akamai Technologies Inc, which has servers spread among some 1,100 communications set-ups. "We can route around issues that are occurring."

New York has two major exchange centers where U.S. backbone telecommunication providers meet data from undersea cables, said Doug Madory, senior analyst at Renesys Corp, which monitors Internet response times. A number of network addresses were inaccessible on Tuesday afternoon, including many in the New York area, and connection times for others were slower than normal, he said, but the disruptions were limited.

Still, a handful of popular web sites, including Google's YouTube, AOL Inc's Huffington Post, and the network of sites owned by Gawker Media, did experience outages.

Social news site BuzzFeed and News Corp's financial site MarketWatch were also reduced to bare-bones versions as they regrouped on Tuesday.

At least some of the problems were the direct result of data centers losing power and being unable to fuel their own generators because of flooding.

Most web sites use commercial data centers rather than running their own computer servers, in part to ensure security and stability in emergencies. Many of those data centers offer back-up services elsewhere.

But New York data centers, including Internap and Datagram, went down due to the power and flooding problems. BuzzFeed, Huffington Post and Gawker all crashed because of Datagram.

"How dumb to locate datacenter in a flood zone. And how dumb to host Gawker servers there," Gawker founder Nick Denton wrote on Twitter. The company moved to blog platform Tumblr for a while, one of a number of creative workarounds made easier by more advanced web offerings. BuzzFeed moved everything onto Akamai and Amazon's web services arm.

An AOL spokeswoman said after Huffington Post's main data center went under that it had shifted to a backup data system in Newark. That worked until all three telecom firms serving that location went down.

"At approximately 3:30 a.m., network connectivity failed at the backup datacenter when all three of its providers each separately failed," said AOL's Erin Kurtz.

Huffington Post switched to a skeletal blog platform until it recovered at eight hours later.

Dow Jones and Datagram could not be reached immediately for comment. YouTube refused to say why it became unavailable, but Google's New York headquarters was closed by the storm. The company said the video site was available, if slow, for most users by Tuesday evening.

Many large and mid-sized companies adopted disaster planning for data after the September 11, 2001, attacks, making sure to have duplicates of core data in different locations. Smaller firms have taken the same route by moving to cloud computing, which generally spreads data across multiple facilities.

"The whole point of the cloud is that companies are insulated from outages really of any sort, absent a giant nuclear disaster," said Bernard Golden, vice president at enStratus Networks, a cloud software company. "You want your provider to have facilities in disparate-enough locations so that even if you have problems in a particular region, your service is still available."

Alternative Therapies Help Many Arthritis Patients

Researchers have confirmed that complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) can help many arthritis patients manage their condition. Their results suggest that the majority of patients who used CAT plus prescribed medication believed they benefited from the alternative treatment.

The scientists published their findings in the November 2012 issue of the Journal of Clinical Nursing. The lead author is Professor Nada Alaaeddine of the University of St. Joseph in Beirut, Lebanon. The team studied 250 patients ages 20 to 90, according to Medical News Today. Around one in three suffered from osteoarthritis. The others had rheumatoid arthritis.

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis remains unknown, but experts consider it an autoimmune disease that leads to inflammation of joints and surrounding tissues, PubMed reports. Treatments in traditional medicine include anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, antimalarial medications, corticosteroids, and biologic agents that control how the immune system works. Surgery is sometimes necessary for severe joint problems.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, according to the Mayo Clinic. It develops when protective cartilage on the ends of bones wears away over the years. Patients typically use acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and narcotics for pain relief. Some undergo physical therapy, wear braces or shoe inserts, or receive training in managing chronic pain. Injections into the joints are also part of traditional medicine. Some individuals require surgery to realign bones or replace joints.

The Beirut scientists found that 23 percent of the patients used CATs in addition to prescribed drugs. Nearly two-thirds considered CAT beneficial, citing improved sleeping patterns and activity levels, plus lower pain intensity.

The CAT utilized most was herbal therapy (83 percent). Others included exercise (22 percent), massage (12 percent), acupuncture (3 percent), yoga and meditation (3 percent), and dietary supplements (3 percent). Twenty-four percent sought medical care for side effects that proved reversible. Surprisingly, 59 percent did not mention using CATs to their healthcare providers.

Before CAT use, 12 percent said they had no pain. Afterward, the number was 43 percent. The percentage of those who slept all night increased from 9 to 66 percent.

Prior to using CATs, 3 percent of patients said pain didn't limit them. Afterward, the figure rose to 12 percent. The percentage who reported that they could do all activities, but with pain, increased from 26 to 52 percent.

The researchers stressed that when considering CAT, patients should discuss the various therapies with their healthcare providers. This is important because of potential side effects and due to possible interactions between herbal products and prescription medications.

For the last 10 years, I have experienced significant pain from osteoarthritis but have successfully managed the illness. The physicians treating me continue to believe that alternative therapies help many arthritis patients. As a result, they have encouraged me to try massage, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and certain dietary supplements along with traditional medical treatments.

Poor Sanitation Found at Pharmacy Linked to Meningitis Outbreak

Bryce Vickmark for The New York Times

The building housing the New England Compounding Center and the nearby recycling center.

WASHINGTON ? A federal inspection of a company whose tainted pain medicine has caused one of the worst public health drug disasters since the 1930s found greenish-yellow residue on sterilization equipment, surfaces coated with levels of mold and bacteria that exceeded the company?s own environmental limits, and an air-conditioner that was shut off nightly despite the importance of controlling temperature and humidity.

The findings, made public on Friday by the Food and Drug Administration, followed a report from Massachusetts regulators on Tuesday and offered disturbing new details in an emerging portrait of what went wrong inside the New England Compounding Center, the pharmacy at the heart of a national meningitis outbreak in which 25 people have died, 313 more have fallen ill and as many as 14,000 people are believed to have been exposed.

Instead of producing tailor-made drugs for individual patients, as the law allowed, the company turned into a major drug maker that supplied some of the most prestigious hospitals in the country, including ones affiliated with Harvard, Yale and the Mayo Clinic, all with minimal oversight from federal regulators.

Federal officials also drew attention to the company?s proximity to a recycling plant where excavators and freight trucks heaped old mattresses, plastics and other materials, generating large amounts of dust. The plant, which is owned by one of the same people as the pharmacy, has not always complied with regulations and has drawn complaints, according to records in Framingham, Mass., where the company is located.

And as the death toll continues to rise, the F.D.A.?s commissioner, Dr. Margaret Hamburg, who was appointed by President Obama, has stayed mostly silent.

Some observers said that weighing in loudly and publicly on a contentious issue was simply not Dr. Hamburg?s style. Others said that it was because the agency was preparing a criminal case and would not want to endanger that with statements construed to be prejudicial. David Kessler, a former F.D.A. commissioner, pointed to the impending presidential election and efforts to keep the outbreak from becoming a political issue.

?Everyone is closed down right now,? he said. ?People are being very careful. No one wants to make a mistake.?

The inspection report offered the clearest indication yet that the fungus that contaminated the company?s vials of methylprednisolone acetate, an injectable pain medicine, may have gotten there because of the company?s own practices.

Inspectors said that 83 out of 321 vials from one of the lots linked to the meningitis outbreak that they observed contained ?greenish black foreign matter? and another 17 vials had ?white filamentous material.?

The report said the company had tested only one sample from that lot, and it had proved sterile. When the F.D.A. tested 50 vials from that same lot, all of them contained some microbial growth.

Experts said that perhaps the most worrisome finding was that the company?s own testing between January and September found surfaces in the clean rooms contaminated with either bacteria or mold exceeding the levels at which the company?s own procedures called for remedial measures. In some cases, there were so many bacteria or fungi in a sample that the whole testing dish was overrun with a so-called overgrowth.

?Think of a plant just growing out of control,? said Steven Lynn, director of the Office of Manufacturing and Product Quality at the F.D.A. Yet, according to the agency, there was no evidence the company took remedial actions.

?This is pretty heinous stuff,? said Lou Diorio of LDT Health Solutions, a consultant to compounding pharmacies. ?This just shows a general lack of basic clean-room principles.?

Russell E. Madsen, a consultant on sterility issues to the pharmaceutical industry, said of the inspection report: ?In all my time in the pharmaceutical industry, which is 45 years, I?ve never seen one this bad.?

Another problem was the company?s air-conditioning system, which employees said was switched off between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. in the room where sterile drugs were made. Maintaining proper temperature and humidity is important for retarding the growth of microbes. ?

Sabrina Tavernise reported from Washington, and Andrew Pollack from Los Angeles. Abby Goodnough contributed reporting from Boston, and Denise Grady from New York. Sheelagh McNeill contributed research.

Apple Q4 2012 earnings: $36 billion in revenue, $8.2 billion net profit

Apple Q4 2012 earnings

Just a day after introducing the iPad mini, a revised iMac, a 4th-generation iPad and a retooled Mac mini, the company is outing its Q4 2012 earnings -- and it looks as if it has narrowly fell short of Wall Street estimates. Revenue was pegged at $36 billion (compared to estimates of $35.08 billion), with net profit at $8.2 billion. For the sake of comparison, the outfit's fourth quarter of 2011 saw $28.27 billion in revenue alongside $6.62 billion net profit -- at the time, those comically large numbers were actually not up to Wall Street's comical expectations. If you're looking for a quarter-over-quarter comparison, the company's Q3 2012 report showed $35 billion in total revenue, with $8.8 billion in net profits.

The company is guiding for $52 billion in revenues for Q1 2013, while announcing that it sold 26.9 million iPhones (up from 17.01 million a year ago), 14 million iPads (up from 11.12 million) and 5 million Macs (up from 4.89 million) in this quarter. As for the waning iPod business? Predictably, it sold just 5.3 million of those, representing a 19 percent drop from the year-ago quarter. Naturally, the company is expecting its next earnings report to be the one that blows everyone away, with holiday sales -- combined with a slew of new kit -- to propel things leading into 2013. Apple also announced that shareholders that hold stock as of November 12th will pick up a $2.65 / share dividend.

As for other specifics, we're told that gross margin was 40.0 percent compared to 40.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, while international sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarter's revenue. Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO, proudly boasted: "We're pleased to have generated over $41 billion in net income and over $50 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2012. Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2013, we expect revenue of about $52 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $11.75." As for the outfit's current stash of on-hand cash? $121.3 billion. Yeah. The financial results call will get going at 5PM ET, and we'll be liveblogging it right here!

N.Y. police officer charged with plan to cook, eat women

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York City police officer was charged on Thursday with conspiring to kidnap, torture, cook and eat women whose names he listed in his computer.

In a criminal complaint unsealed in Manhattan federal court, Gilberto Valle III, 28, of Forest Hills, Queens, was charged with conspiring to cross state lines to kidnap the women and with illegally accessing a federal database. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Investigators uncovered a file on Valle's computer containing the names and pictures of at least 100 women, and the addresses and physical descriptions of some of them, according to the complaint. It said he had undertaken surveillance of some of the women at their places of employment and their homes.

Valle was arrested Wednesday by the FBI.

In an excerpt of a July conversation with an unnamed co-conspirator, Valle is quoted in the complaint as saying: "I can just show up at her home unannounced. It will not alert her, and I can knock her out, wait until dark and kidnap her right out of her home."

"I was thinking of tying her body onto some kind of apparatus ... cook her over a low heat, keep her alive as long as possible," he said. The woman in question is identified only as "Victim 1."

Valle created a document called "Abducting and Cooking: A Blueprint," Manhattan federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said in a statement.

Bharara said Valle told an unnamed co-conspirator that he would kidnap another woman for $5,000.

"This case is all the more disturbing when you consider Valle's position as a New York City police officer and his sworn duty to serve and protect," he said.

Valle, who an official said had no prior criminal record, was not charged with carrying out any of the alleged planned attacks, suggesting he was arrested before any of the targeted women were harmed. He is due to appear in Manhattan federal court later on Thursday.

A law enforcement official involved in the investigation characterized Valle's actions as an online "fantasy game."

"He was titillated by it," said the official, who is not authorized to discuss the case publicly. "It looks like he was having these fantasy conversations with people he's talking to in foreign countries."

Valle's estranged wife contacted the FBI after discovering pornography on his computer, according to the law enforcement official, who said the couple is separated.

A lawyer for Valle could not immediately be identified. A spokesman for the Police Department could not be reached for comment.

India prepares to kick Monsanto to the curb

(NaturalNews) India, the world's second-most populous country and one of its poorest, has apparently had enough of agribusiness giant Monsanto.

According to a recent story in Science magazine:

Sounding what some regard as the death knell for the development of genetically modified food crops in India, a high-profile parliamentary panel last week recommended that GM crop "field trials under any garb should be discontinued forthwith," and that agricultural GM research should "only be done under strict containment." If implemented, the report's recommendations would paralyze research and erode India's food security, warns India's chief of crop research.

Even more damning is this: Following the release of the report, the panel's chair, Basudeb Acharia, said in no uncertain terms: "India should not go in for GM food crops."

According to the author of the piece, Pallava Bagla, the panel's recommendation has been looked upon by some "as the death knell of the development of genetically modified food crops in India," a development that, despite the country's burgeoning population, would nonetheless be a sound policy decision, given what we know about the ill effects of GM foods.

'Sending mixed signals'

Consider that, from a public policy perspective, it's fair to ponder just how much India will save in healthcare costs alone for its citizens - health expenditures that would have been caused by GM foods but that would never materialize if the country abandons such foods altogether.

As you might have guessed, not everyone is pleased, or agrees with, the panel's recommendation. Swapan Dutta, a rice geneticist and deputy director of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, suggested that if the panel's recommendation is implemented, it would paralyze research and threaten the country's food security. He added that "hope for GM research in India is lost."

But this development is not a new one to those who have been following India's souring relationship with Monsanto over the past few years.

"The Indian government has been sending mixed signals about its commitment to agricultural GM technology," writes Sayer Ji, founder of the scientific health food website GreenMedInfo.com.

For example, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has voiced his support recently for GM crops, telling Science magazine, "In due course of time we must make use of genetic engineering technologies to increase the productivity of our agriculture."

Also, in 2002, the government approved Bt-toxin carrying cotton as the first GM commercial crop in India, a decision that has led to more than 1,100 varieties of GM cotton in the country now, accounting for some 93 percent of total cotton production.

"But," Ji points out, "Singh's own ministers are not towing the party line." He says the Science article notes that "in 2010, former environment minister Jairam Ramesh imposed a moratorium on the commercialization of Bt brinjal, a traditional Indian eggplant, even after the ministry's scientific advisory panel had given the GM variety approval."

History of grief between India and Monsanto

The article further points out in its June issue that environmental minister Jayanthi Natarajan was quoted as saying, "Genetically modified foods have no place in ensuring India's food security."

Indian officials generally admit that utilizing GM foods has managed to allow the country to produce much higher yields of economically important crops, such as cotton. But, they argue, perhaps the biggest driver of the panel's decision is Monsanto's trademarking of its seeds; controlling the seeds, they believe, is compromising India's food safety and security.

The panel's recommendation will carry political weight but it is not mandatory. Ji says "the next step is for government ministries to digest the panel's report and to decide if the report's recommendations, which carry political weight but are not mandatory, will be implemented."

The panel's recommendation is just the latest snafu between India and Monsanto.

A year ago, India sued the agribusiness giant for "biopiracy," accusing the company of stealing India's indigenous plants in order to re-engineer them into patented varieties.

Indian officials complained then that Monsanto and other agri-giants were attempting to exploit the country's crops for their own personal gain.

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A U.S. astronaut departing this week for the International Space Station said Monday that the bulk of the scientific benefits from the orbiting laboratory will be seen over the coming decade, amid questions on whether the estimated $100 billion spent in last 12 years is worth the effort.

"The first ten years were really intensive in the construction side of it, bringing all the pieces together and really getting the science enabled," said NASA astronaut Kevin Ford, who will blast off on a Soyuz craft from the Russian-leased Baikonur spacer center in Kazakhstan on Tuesday together with Russian colleagues Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin.

Portland, Indiana-born Ford said the station would now enter its "utilization phase."

"We're going to learn the bulk of everything we know about the science that we're doing up there in the next decade," he said at a press conference on the eve of the launch. He spoke from behind a glass screen designed to ensure the astronauts do not contract illnesses before their mission.

Of the three men departing Tuesday, only Ford has spent any time in orbit. He spent two weeks in space as pilot of the space shuttle Discovery in 2009 on a mission to transport scientific equipment to the ISS.

The U.S. space program has been in a vulnerable position since the decommissioning of the U.S. Shuttle fleet in 2011, which left Russia's Soviet-designed Soyuz craft as the only means for international astronauts to reach the space station.

Earlier this month, California-based SpaceX successfully delivered a half-ton of supplies craft called Dragon to the ISS, the first official shipment under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. The contract calls for 12 such shipments.

Ford said private companies like SpaceX and Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., whose Cygnus cargo vehicle is scheduled for its first trip to the ISS in December, would ensure the sustainability of the lab over the coming decade and enable new exploration.

"These companies out there are themselves learning a lot about getting to and from low-earth orbit and picking up that task so that NASA can indeed begin to concentrate on things out of earth orbit and going out further into our solar system," Ford said.

His remarks echo a statement to Congress in September by William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator for space operations.

Gerstenmaier said commercial transportation would enable the United States to fly its own astronauts to and from the International Space Station, "end our sole reliance on foreign governments" and allow for the expansion of the full-time crew to seven from six.

The incoming Dragon held 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms) of groceries, clothes, science experiments and other gear. It is to depart with almost twice that much cargo at the end of the month. Dragon is the only cargo ship capable of bringing back research and other items, filling a void left by NASA's retired shuttles.

The departure of the Dragon and a spacewalk to carry out repair operations on the station will be among the first operations to be handled by the incoming team.

"We really face a lot of tasks that we'll concentrate on right off the bat when we get aboard," Ford said. "After the spacewalk comes down, hopefully we'll have a little time to catch our breath."

U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams, Russia's Yuri Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan, who have been at the ISS since mid-July, are scheduled to return to earth next month.

Another multinational three-man crew with astronauts from the United States, Canada and Russia will set off from Baikonur in late December to take their place.

"Christmas Day ... has already been cancelled because we'll be having a Soyuz arriving aboard with our crewmates," Ford said. "Perhaps when they arrive it will be like Santa Claus arriving and bringing us gifts from earth."
