ANSWER: What a fabulous idea! We had a Lazy Daze when I was growing up and took our dogs on excursions as well. I assume you plan to rent an RV for your trip and that the RV will be a Class C, meaning a self-contained motorized vehicle built on a van chassis with a loft for sleeping above the driver and passenger seating area. A Class A will give you more space to accommodate your 65-pound baby, but won't be as easy for first time RV drivers to operate.
If you go the Class C route, consider Cruise America, which has 130 rental locations around the United States and welcomes pets. All? Cruise America asks is that you agree to clean up after your furry friend and return the RV in the same condition as received, otherwise you?ll be subject to a cleaning fee up to $250. That?s better than Camping World, which has 14 locations and also welcomes pets. The difference is Camping World RV Rentals of New York, for instance, charges a $150 pet surcharge, plus requires a $1,000 fully-refundable pet deposit to cover any damages or necessary cleaning when you return the RV. That?s on top of the $1,000 deposit required to rent the RV.
Although it'll be just two adults, Cruise America?s Compact RV may be too narrow for your large dog. Plus, your sleeping quarters would be in the queen bed upstairs, which could be an issue if he is accustomed to sleeping next to you. Keep in mind that he?ll be in a new environment and may look up at you from the bottom level and wonder why he is on the floor.
If you upgrade to a Standard RV from Cruise America, there?s a full-size bed on the bottom, plus you?ll have more walk-through room. Yes, that means less bed space for you adults but you?ll be closer to man?s best friend. Whichever route you go, don?t forget to secure your pet while traveling. Some people use crates in their RVs or place beds in the rear. Happy travels!
